The next morning, the breathtaking splendor of Meteora awaits. These colossal rock pillars, sculpted by nature over millions of years, rise dramatically from the Thessalian Plain. Perched atop these towering formations are the legendary monasteries of Meteora, a testament to human devotion and resilience. Once accessible only by rope ladders and pulleys, these monasteries were built by hermit monks seeking isolation and spiritual connection in the 14th century.
Today, six of the original twenty-four monasteries remain active and open to visitors. Each is a treasure trove of religious artifacts, frescoes, and history. Marvel at the Great Meteoron Monastery, the largest of them all, with its fascinating museum and breathtaking views. Visit Varlaam Monastery, renowned for its exquisite frescoes, or St. Stephen’s Monastery, easily accessible and known for its serene atmosphere.
